A new Panera Bread Company location has opened in Clayton, MO, but with a slightly different approach than other stores: this location allows you to pay what you want for your order.

It's a nonprofit approach run by a nonprofit foundation. Under the name "St. Louis Bread Co. Cares," customers can pay a penny or $100 for their food. If the restaurant is able to sustain itself finacially, the model will be expanded around the country.

Quote:
Customers seemed alternately puzzled and pleased by the concept.
Dawn Frierdich, 52, came in to buy three loaves of bread an iced tea. She asked how much the drink would cost.

"About $1.85," said the 21-year-old cashier, Michael Miller.

And the whole order?

"It would be, like, $12," Miller told her, reminding her she didn't have to pay if she didn't want to. Frierdich tried to hand him $12 in cash, but he directed her to put it in the donation jar.

"This is a little hard. I just can't wrap my head around this," Frierdich said.

I wonder how many churches would pass the offering plate this way, letting those in need take something out according to their need?

I've heard of church or two that actually did this during the Christmas season, and other churches that gave money to their members telling them to go and invest in giving to others.

Still better might be to actually follow these instructions on tithing in Deut 14,
Quote:
28 "At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year, and shall deposit it in your town.
29 "The Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do."

Blessings

Now that's an interesting thought!

Haven't found any churches who actually follow Deut 14:28-29 in their giving/serving.

I did find this article on giving :

http://www.barna.org/barna-update/article/18-congregations/341-the-economys-impact-part-3-of-3-donors-reduce-giving-brace-for-the-long-haul

Quote:
Many Americans appear to be significantly cutting back on charitable giving in order to adjust to the downturn. Nearly half of all adults (48%) said they had reduced their giving to non-profit organizations (excluding churches and houses of worship) in the last three months. Churches were slightly less likely to be affected but were certainly not immune to cutbacks: three out of ten Americans had dropped their level of support to churches and congregations (29%) in recent months.

When compared to a similar Barna study conducted in the fourth quarter of 2008, when the economy began to plummet, there has been a 58% increase in the percentage of Americans who have curtailed their recent giving to non-profits and a 45% increase in the proportion that have reduced their donations to churches.

While many church donors have been able to maintain their typical level of donations, those who have cut back have dropped their giving substantially. Nearly one-quarter of church donors had cut contributions by 20% or more. That compares with just one-tenth who had done so in the first few months of the crisis. In other words, the segment of donors who have dramatically decreased their contributions to churches has more than doubled in the last 14 months.

The bottom line is that the economy IS NOT RECOVERING, no matter what words we hear from the White House and the liberal media!
