November 2009
Dear Friends,
“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His mercy endures forever.” We have two children who are graduating from high school this year!! The school year ends soon here and the children will be out for summer break. This has been a very busy time for us with school meetings, final exams, graduation dinners and pictures!
Getting to go to Eduardo’s graduation dinner was a very special event! All the moms got to escort their sons—Eduardo looked so handsome all dressed up in his black suit. When I think about Eduardo, he holds a special place in my heart. He was the first little one to come into our home. We had no idea all his brothers and sisters would soon be joining him too!
The first time I saw Eduardo he was wearing a little black suit coat and pants. It was torn and tattered and had a small hole in the jacket pocket—it must have been handed down quite a few times! “He is six years old.” The social worker said, “We picked him up at the police station this morning. He ran away from home and was wondering the streets. I will call you later to see how he is doing.” Eduardo gave me a sweet shy smile, and I notice his two front teeth were missing. He looked so sweet and small in his little suit. Eduardo didn’t say much at first but he was very happy to get cleaned up and get a hot meal.
Later that day I did get a call from the social worker, but she called in a panic to tell me there were four more children and they desperately needed a home. “Could you please take them right away?” she said. “The house where they live is not fit for children.” I wondered if I was prepared, how would we manage but this was the day I had waited for, for so long!!
I will never forget Eduardo’s first day of school. He held on to me as we walked in the door. As soon as we walked in the classroom one little boy asked, “Is that your mother?” Eduardo and I may not look alike, but I couldn’t have felt more like his mother that day and hoped he felt the same! I waited to hear his answer and he looked up at me with a big smile and said, “Yes she is my mother!” I have been Mom ever since!
Eduardo has always been adventuresome and has big dreams of working in other countries, and would like to study criminology. I don’t think he has ever forgotten the night he spent at the police station and when he was little he told us many stories about that night. Because he dreamed of a different life and set out on his own that night, God led him to us and in return all of his brothers and sisters were rescued too.
We are also very proud of Daniela who graduates in December too. She missed so much school when she was little in order to take care of her brothers and sisters. She has worked very hard over the years to catch up and she did it! We are so grateful for all the Lord has done in her life!
God is so good to rescue us out of our circumstances and He has been so faithful to supply all our needs. Sometimes we have to take the first step but He always meets us and is with us along the way. You all have been so faithful in supporting us through the years and have made it possible for all of our children and many more that we work with to go to school and get the help they need. There are so many more children who desperately need a home and a loving family. Please pray as we continue on the building project that all our needs will be met so we can continue the work.
We need a 15 passenger van or small bus for all the children we help. We also need to continue to raise money for the building project so we can put up a fence to keep the children and all the homes safe in the future. We don’t have all of the money raised that we will need but we are trusting in the Lord and moving forward! We appreciate so much you standing with us!
Much Love,
Enrique and Charlyn Mejia
